Prayer, Scripture Testing, and Obedience

A practical guide for how a disciple learns

A repeatable method for bringing a teaching before God, examining it by Scripture, distinguishing evidence from interpretation, and moving from understanding into obedience.

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”(James 1:22, KJV)

Begin in Prayer

  • Ask God for truth rather than confirmation.
  • Ask for willingness to surrender a preferred interpretation if Scripture establishes something different.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to expose pride, fear, haste, defensiveness, and the desire to appear knowledgeable.

Read Before You Synthesize

  • Read the passage in context before consulting a teaching or secondary source.
  • Write down explicit statements from the text.
  • Separate what the text states from what you infer from patterns, history, language, or synthesis.

Use Four Evidence Labels

  • Scripture: what the inspired text explicitly states or clearly establishes.
  • Pattern or inference: a conclusion drawn from repeated scriptural relationships or implications.
  • Historical witness: information from ancient sources, archaeology, language, chronology, or historical records.
  • KAP reconstruction or application: a proposed synthesis or practical application that must remain open to testing and correction.

Move Toward Obedience

  • Ask what the established truth requires from your conduct, speech, priorities, relationships, worship, or service.
  • Choose one concrete act of obedience rather than ending with a general feeling of agreement.
  • Return later and ask whether the teaching produced lasting change or only temporary interest.

Reflection and Practice

□ What does the Scripture explicitly say?

□ What am I inferring rather than reading directly?

□ What outside evidence is being used, and what weight should it carry?

□ What conclusion remains a working reconstruction?

□ What act of obedience follows from what has actually been established?
