Teachability, Correction, and Obedience

A discipleship worksheet for remaining correctable before God

A guided worksheet for recognizing resistance, receiving correction, and turning correction into specific obedience without shame, defensiveness, or spiritual performance.

“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”(Proverbs 12:1, KJV)

Teachability Is a Discipleship Posture

A teachable disciple does not assume that sincerity guarantees accuracy. Teachability means remaining willing to be instructed, corrected, and changed.

Correction is most useful when it becomes obedience. Merely admitting that we were wrong is not the same as changing direction.

Recognizing Resistance

  • Defending a position before listening fully.
  • Searching only for evidence that supports what I already believe.
  • Treating correction as rejection or humiliation.
  • Using spiritual language to avoid a practical act of obedience.
  • Becoming more concerned with being right than becoming aligned.

Correction Process

  • Name the issue plainly: What belief, motive, habit, or behavior is being exposed?
  • Test the correction: What Scripture establishes the need for change?
  • Identify resistance: What do I lose if I accept the correction?
  • Choose obedience: What specific action demonstrates a changed response?
  • Review fruit: Did the correction produce humility, truthfulness, peace, justice, mercy, self-control, or greater faithfulness?

A Healthy Response to Being Wrong

  • Do not protect your identity by protecting an error.
  • Do not dramatize correction into self-condemnation.
  • Receive truth, make the needed change, and continue following Christ.
  • Maturity includes becoming easier to correct because obedience matters more than reputation.

Reflection and Practice

□ What correction am I currently resisting?

□ What Scripture should I examine before deciding whether the correction is sound?

□ What would I need to surrender if the correction is true?

□ What exact action will demonstrate obedience?

□ When will I review whether I actually followed through?

Use this resource with the ordered KAP discipleship teaching path. Do not substitute a worksheet for prayer, Scripture testing, obedience, or direct seeking of God.
